Revitalizing Philippine Unions
Like in many parts of the world, trade union membership in the Philippines is on the decline. Trade union decline has been attributed to a host of both exogenous factors. However, the declining effort on the part of unions in adapting their organizing strategies and tactics to the challenges of globalization has undeniably contributed to the contraction in union density. To the extent that organizing is the most critical challenge facing unions today emphasizes the need to focus on revitalization efforts. It is crucial for unions to embark on union revitalization initiatives and campaigns to avert the decline in union membership and influence.
With this handbook, the University of the Philippines - School of Labor and Industrial Relations (UP Solair) presents a very readable version of a successful academic analysis of the internal workings and attempts to the revitalization of Philippine trade unions. The outcome of the research on union revitalization (UR) and social movement unionism (SMU) will serve as starting points and guidelines for developing union strategies that will hopefully spur union revitalization in the country.
